Prep Students for Success with an MCAP Practice Test

Check how students are doing with an MCAP practice test and prepare for MCAP testing.

What is the MCAP?

Maryland’s state assessment is called the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP). The program aims to assess the students of Maryland to collect information that will allow insight into where students might need more support and assistance. Like many other state assessments, MCAP fulfills the requirements of ESSA (the Every Student Succeeds Act), which requires student assessment in grades 3 through 8 in Math and ELA, an additional assessment for Math and ELA in high school, and two assessments in science throughout that time span. English learners must also take an assessment each year. Maryland state also mandates a social studies assessment for middle schoolers, another for U.S. Government in high school and an additional science assessment for high school.
The MCAP tracks how students and schools are performing so the state can measure student learning and progress. Schools and districts who want to make sure students are on track for graduation requirements and to succeed on the MCAP, may benefit from tracking and supporting student learning throughout the school year so students can be prepared for MCAP testing.

Preparing with an MCAP Practice Test

One of the best ways to prepare students for the state assessments is to give them an MCAP practice test that presents similar content and mimics the look and feel of the official assessment. The MCAP practice tests listed on this page contain released items from past MCAP assessments. Find the MCAP practice test for your grade and students and assign it to them on Edulastic to provide online practice and get an idea of how much of the content students understand.

MCAP Testing Tips:

  1. Track standards progress

Track students’ progress through learning standards or career ready standards. After giving an MCAP practice test that is listed on this page, you can view how students performed not only on each question, but also on each standard. The Edulastic platform provides ways to track standards so you can identify what students have mastered and where they need more support. For learning standards that are not mastered, you can provide students with additional instruction and practice to target those areas. By knowing where students are at, you can best support them on their learning journey as they prepare for the state test and become college and career ready.
  2. Provide practice for each Technology Enhanced Item

In order to succeed on the MCAP assessment, students need to be comfortable handling Technology Enhanced Items(TEIs). On the MCAP, students will encounter TEIs such as drag and drop, passage-based questions, and expression evaluator questions. With online test prep, students can get comfortable with the functions required to read and respond to these types of prompts. The practice tests on this page give students the opportunity to practice manipulating and responding to these questions.
  3. Practice, Practice, Practice

The more practice the better. Give students online practice questions that target standards they’ll need to have mastered for the MCAP. With Edulastic you can adjust the assessments to suit your needs. You can split the MCAT practice test into multiple assessments or you can edit the questions to make them unique or to add to them. Want to target a particular standard? Search the item library by standards so you can pull up additional practice that will help students master a skill.
  4. Spread out the practice

Throughout the school year, give students quizzes on a platform that mimics the look and feel of the state test so when they see the official standardized test, they won’t worry about the mechanics of the test, and can focus on demonstrating mastery of the content. Closer to MCAP testing, give them a full length practice test, like the ones offered on this page to provide them with a sample of the duration and a sense of what it’s like to go the distance.

Give students an MCAP Practice Test

Preparing students for MCAP testing can be a year-long endeavor, however in the final months, there are some key things that can help bring students across the finish line of success. The more opportunities you give students to get comfortable with the format and problems they will see on the MCAP, the more likely they are to succeed on the MCAP test.
